Interview with Mats Funderud (Kraanium): "SLAAAAAAM!"

Kraanium. If you're into more brutal bands, you probably know them. Like them or not, this shit is heavy. With their new album coming up soon, their guitarist and founder Mats Funderud found a little time to answer my questions.  

1: How did the name "Kraanium" come to be?
We just thought about a brutal name and thought about cranium, but then it was already several bands called this. So we just made it a bit more Norwegian-inspired, 'cos in norwegian we write it like Kranium and it means the same as in English.
2: How did you guys get together as a band? 
Started around ten years ago when me and my brother wanted to make a new type of band, 'cos as of that time we had mostly played stuff like hardcore, black metal and punk. So we talked to a drummerfriend and he was down, then we put out an add on some norwegian board that we needed another guitarplayer and we found Vidar, then we started playing and just having fun, took us around 4 years before we kinda found the style that we wanted to play and it has basically just progressed from there.
We had problems to find a bassplayer so we just played witout one for a while. And then on some show we just said as a joke that we needed a bassplayer and one dude came up to us and wanted to try out, this was Ian and he has been in the band ever since, hehe. Not the same line up now as when we started though, had to change about 10 different drummers since then but the rest of the line up has been the same since we started.
3: What are your future plans/ambitions?
Just keep playing the music we love, write new albums and tour/play as many gigs as possible.
4: Where do you get inspiration for your music, lyrics and song titles?
Alot from serial killers and the twisted acts/thoughts they have! Also we all love horror and gore movies so we find alot of inspiration from there as well.
5: Where do you get all the sick artworks?
We get it from our heads, haha!! We are all sick fucks in the band
6: Have you encountered the "this music is shit" attitude?
Hehe, well, some people diss us for sure, but we don't care.. More people seem to like us than hate us so that's what matters. Always some haters out there but fuck 'em we say!
7: Have your music caused you any trouble?
Well, our two first albums were actually banned in Germany some months ago, but to us this is just good promotion, haha!
8: What was the best gig you ever played?
Las Vegas Death Fest 2012, that shit was amazing! Got to meet a lot of great people and play with alot of bands that inspire us alot, it was an absolute honour for us.
9: Is there a song you are most proud of writing?
Reverse Abortion or Double Barrel Penetration, 'cos these songs was the start for our "style" that felt was perfect for us... SLAAAAAAM!
10: Can you tell us something about your new album "Chronicles Of Perversion"?
Well, it's out on Comatose music and in our opinion the best music we have written so far. The fans who like us will not be disapointed, I promise!
11: What is the craziest shit that ever happened to you? (Related to the band)
We got stopped by the Homeland security when we entered the US and had to sit in interrigation for 3 damn hours 'cos our papers were not in order. Damn, that was scary shit I tell ya, but we made it in the end, hehe.
12: Your life phylosophy?
No glam, just fucking slam, hahaha!!!
13: Say anything you want to your fans.

1. How have you been?  Not good at all, it’s been a very shit year so far with multiple deaths of people I loved very much, but I’d rather not discuss it. 1. How have you been? I’ve been good, though my life’s been pretty uneventful other than the slam shit. 2. What are you currently listening to that you would recommend? I’ve been spinning some classic slam albums like Rationing The Sacred Human Remains by Parasitic Ejaculation and Uterovaginal Insertions of Extirpated Anomalies by Cephalotripsy. A newer band I’ve been listening to is Cranioclast, an oldschool deathcore style project that my friend has. He also has a slam project called Nephrostomy that DT is actually getting a feature on!
