Interview with Mats Funderud (Kraanium, Diphenylchloroarsine, Fermented Masturbation, Cadaveric Necropsy, more)

1. How have you been?

Yoooo, I've been good. First week of working this year and we had over 50 cm of snow and temperatures under -10 Celsius. But I'm holding on!

2. What are you currently listening to that you would recommend?

Currently on a black metal binge due to obvious reasons like all this fucking snow and cold, haha. But I have also been jamming some classics of slam and BDM. Trying to get into some new bands and releases, but honestly I always end up going back to the classic stuff.
A few bands: Akhlys, Vinterland, Cephalotripsy, Lust of Decay, Cannibalistic Infancy.

3. You announced a new project called Cadaveric Necropsy. Can you tell us more about it?

Oh, it's gonna be slammy as fuck. Surprised? (laugh) It's a project with me on strings, Justin from Murdered on drums and Ondrej, who used to sing in Epicardiectomy, on vocals. Expect a huuuge inspiration of Cephalotripsy on this one! We plan to release a promo track soon with a lyric video. And later this year a 8 track slamstrosity entitled “Torturous Trinities” set to be released on Rotten Music.

4. Other than that, what are your musical plans for the foreseeable future?

We plan to use this year with Kraanium to start writing and hopefully also record some new songs for another release through Unique Leader Records. Not sure if it's gonna be a full length or an EP yet - depending on how fast we will write the new songs, I guess. Other than that, we're gonna announce a new singer and work on getting him implemented as good as possible into the band. If all goes as planned we are also looking into a tour at the end of the year.

5. What is your favorite piece of art you have produced that has a special place in your heart?

I think it has to be an old classic shirt we had entitled Zombified Infanticide with a zombified woman eating her own fetus. Made by my long time friend and tattooist Martin Enger. Black and white design that has a bit of a Mike Majewski feel to it. I just love that type of early 2000s designs.

6. Can you tell us a fun fact related to your music that we may not know?

Out of all the drummers we had throughout the years, one dude was named Fredrik, who later started to do drums in Marduk and became a black metaller.

7. What is the craziest shit that ever happened to you related to the band(s)?

We toured Russia in the winter and it was over -30 degrees Celsius everyday. We drove around 10 hours every night, sleeping in the van and no rest in any bed for that week. We ended up dropping off the tour mid-way due to a drunk driver that made us fear for our safety. On this tour both me and my late brother Martin suffered mental breakdowns due to the constant stress and pressure. It was insane.

8. What are your five desert island picks or your biggest inspirations?

Devourment, Cephalotripsy, Digested flesh, Gutrot and Abominable Putridity.

9. Alien invasion or zombie apocalypse?

Definitely a zombie apocalypse. They are easier to predict and kill than those fucking aliens. Geez!

10. You are one of the OGs of the genre. How has the scene and music changed over the years in your opinion?

Haha, thanks, man! Well, people used to be a lot more chill before and not offended by every little bullshit. Now you can't even write brutal lyrics anymore without getting someone offended or upset due to this woke shit or offended on other people's behalf. Back then people cared more about the brutal music and its energy rather than what we were singing about. Also it was a lot less saturated in the style than I think it is now with too many bands claiming to be slam or BSDM when they are clearly not.
