Interview with Josh Schwartz (Parasitic Ejaculation, Dragging Entrails)

1: How did Parasitic Ejaculation get together as a band?
I joined the band a couple months after they formed. Jon, Evan, Donovan, and Emily formed the band in summer 2011 because they were all really into slam and wanted to play it. Emily left for college in the fall, so I joined up with them.
2: How did Dragging Entrails get together as a band? I am also not a founding member of Dragging Entrails. Donovan and I joined the band after Joey and Larry of Devour the Unborn left. Jaymes is the second vocalist for DxE, and we are all very good friends with him. When Joey and Larry left the band, he wanted us to join, knowing our level of musicianship personally and our commitment to playing slam.
3: You just released your first music video for Distribution for Devourment. How do you feel about it? We are incredibly happy with how the video came out, and we have David Bednar (film) and Ben Lee (editing) to thank for that. The reception has been excellent. Everyone seems to be enjoying the video.
4: You've recorded three albums: two with Parasitic Ejaculation and one with Dragging Entrails. Which one are you most proud of? Well, I am actually not featured on the first Dragging Entrails album. Neither is Donovan. That album features Larry and Joey. And then Parasitic only has one full-length album and an EP. As much as I think we have improved since writing and releasing the EP, I don't think I like either release more or less. They both stand out in terms of style, groove, and catchiness.
5: Both PE and DE have announced new albums. Can you tell us more about it? The new Parasitic album (title and artwork yet to be revealed) is about 75% written! We plan to put about 12 songs on it to make it longer than our last release, and it is definitely something different. It does however, feature a lot of signature traits that appear on our first full-length, as well as a countless number of slams. The album will feature four guest vocalists that are all prominent in the slam death metal scene, and Tony Koehl is doing the artwork. As for the Dragging Entrails album, Martin and Mats Funderud are currently writing, and I am hoping that it will be completed in 2014, but nothing is set in stone yet!
6: What are your future plans/ambitions? We want to continue making music, as the writing process and the outcome are very rewarding. Playing shows has always been a passion of ours, and we wish to continue doing that as well. This is not only for our enjoyment but also for those who appreciate our music and our live performance. And we have yet to play out of the country (US) which we are striving to accomplish!
7: Who/what inspires you? I think mainly, music inspires us. And art. But pertaining to our music specifically, I would say that acts such as Devourment, Short Bus Pileup, Vomit the Soul, Abominable Putridity, etc. have influenced us to make slam music.
8: If someone told you that slam is crap and you're a disgusting pig for liking it, what would you reply with? Have you encountered the "this music is shit" attitude? Only a few times have I heard people saying that slam is "shit music". It doesn't occur often in my experience. But I have heard people call our music specifically "shitty" and other words like that. And I totally understand where people are coming from in calling slamheads "pigs", although I don't necessarily agree with that behaviour. The slam scene supports a lot of negative things, particularly rape culture (def: a concept which links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which prevalent attitudes and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape). I do not support these things and wish to help make slam a continually fun and safe space for everyone to enjoy.
9: One band you'd tour the world with? One? Shit, that's tough. I would have to say that touring the world with our good friends in Logistic Slaughter would be quite an honour.
10: Alien invasion or zombie apocalypse? I'd be more curious to see what an alien invasion would look like.
11: Say anything you want to your fans.
Thanks for reading! Thank you for supporting us as such a young band. And thank you for this interview.
