Interview with Mike Mayo (Waking The Cadaver): Aliens are gay!

  • Waking The Cadaver. The legends. They're back after three years spreading the disease with their Real-Life Death album which did not disappoint. Their guitarist Mike was nice enough to tell me more about things... and stuff.

  • 1: How did you guys get together as a band? The band formed in 2006, and I joined in 2009.
  • 2: It took you three years to release the new album. How do you feel about it? Yeah, it took quite awhile to release Real-Life Death. I'm extremely proud of it though, I think it's the ultimate Waking the Cadaver album. It blends the previous albums really well if you ask me.
  • 3: What are your future plans/ambitions? Future plans as of now is to just lay low until the summer. We have been busy recording the album and touring with Dying Fetus, Exhumed, and Abiotic, and with our jobs at home, things can get a little hectic. I wish I could tour all the time like some of these other bands, but unfortunately real life (no pun intended) happens.
  • 4: Who/what inspires you?
Original extreme music inspires me. I don't listen to anything other than metal most of the time, and I'm inspired by bands I look up to. I don't care if you're extremely technical, or extra groovy, hardcore, or death metal, as long as there is originality and something catchy going on, I'll take some inspiration from it.
  • 5: Is there a song you are most proud of writing? I'm most proud of writing Insult to Injury. It's the first song off Real-Life Death, and it's got all our influences in there. It's got the Disgorge influence, the Sepultura influence, the Dying Fetus influence, all the shit we love is in that song.
  • 6: Have you encountered the "this music is shit" attitude? I think WTC has encountered the "this music is shit" attitude more than any death metal band that I could think of. A lot of people who don't understand guttural death metal know us and think that the style is bizarre, and many death metal fans dislike us too because of our mix of hardcore and slam. You can't win really. Some dork on Youtube who only listens to Devil Wears Prada or something wack like that will dog your band because they have never listened to brutal death metal, and some nerdy death metal guy will dog you because he's afraid how undeath metal they will look for appreciating something a little different. I think lately people are finally getting us though, you almost wack if you still hate on us, haha, there's so much more garbage out now to hate on, probably because of us, lol!
  • 7: One band you'd tour the world with? I don't know who I'd choose to tour the world with. Ask me that question 10 years ago, I'd say Napalm Death or Dying Fetus, and we have been fortunate to actually tour with those bands. So maybe now I'd like to tour with Cannibal Corpse or Hatebreed.
  • 8: What is the craziest shit that ever happened to you? (Related to the band) The craziest shit that ever happened to me being in this band is being in this band! I never in my life thought I'd get to tour all over the world with bands I love and meet like minded metal retards just like me! I can seriously die a happy man!
  • 9: Alien invasion or zombie apocalypse? Zombie apocalypse, aliens are gay!
  • 10: Say anything you want to your fans. Thank you so much supporting Slamming Gore Groove! We are fans just like you and simply try to write music fans would like. Nothing makes us more happy then meeting you people who give us the drive to create more shitty death metal! Like Deathcore Devotion on Facebook here. Like Waking The Cadaver on Facebook here.
