Interview with JP Goss (Heinous Exsanguination, Fresh Wounds, Gloombringer, Bitter Disdain, Sadistic Spliff, Tyrantula)

1. How have you been?

First of all, thanks for having me on The Slam Times, much appreciated! I‘ve been great, been a good start to the year, family is happy and healthy, new music is in the works, can't complain!

2. What are you currently listening to that you would recommend?

There's so much good music out there! I listen to a lot of stuff all the time, but some records I've been playing lately are:

Fatuous Rump - The Water Was Coming Black First

Scasm - Bludgeoned Beyond Repair

Epitomectomy - Incoherent Mumblings of the Dead

Visceral Explosion - Sanguineous Hymns for Disembowelment

Cardiomyotomy - Abandoned Gutted Corpse

Delusional Parasitosis - Ingurgitating Intestinal Rot

3. You released several projects last year and 2 already this year. Which is your favorite?

I'm always proud of all the music I'm a part of and super grateful to work with some great people on them. If I had to pick a favorite it would be our debut EP for Heinous Exsanguination "The Stench of Decaying Flesh". Something about that record just really resonates with me and I'm super grateful to Carlos and Gore House Productions for working with us.

4. You are a pretty busy guy with 6 projects in total. What is it that makes you diversify so much? Why not just focus on one or two projects?

It does seem like I would be super busy with music, and don't get me wrong it definitely takes a good chunk of my time, but being all online projects and working mainly with 2 producers/bandmates on them actually makes it a smooth process. I genuinely have so much fun making music that I'm always looking for what's next to put out, which plays a part in why I'm in so many projects. Also, they may have similarities but I think every project definitely has its own sound and thematic differences.

5. What is the best and worst thing about being in so many projects?

The best thing is always having something to work on! I can almost guarantee you at any given moment there is something in the works with at least one of them, and like I said I genuinely love making brutal music. The only downside I could think of would be the money aspect that goes into it, but when you enjoy something so much it's not really too big of a downside.

6. If you could only continue with one band, which would you choose?

Damn, haha. Tough choice here. If I HAD to pick one band to stick with I think I'd have to go with Heinous Exsanguination. I think that project captures the sound that I enjoy the most the best and I can't wait to start working on a full length for it.

7. All of your bands are online projects. Any plans to start a live band?

The other members live in Texas and Canada, so honestly there's no plans for live shows. I'm a little bit older now (37) and I used to play a lot of shows back in the day, I‘m talking the Myspace era of music. At this point in life I'm just glad to be able to contribute to the heavy music scene in any way and I'm super grateful that people enjoy the work I do. That being said, maybe you'll catch me doing guest vocals on stage at some Florida shows, you never know!

8. What are your musical plans for the future?

Just keep on cranking out music. I just started another new project Bitter Disdain, so I have no plans on starting anything else new unless someone asks me, haha. Right now, Mitchell and I are working on a full length album for Sadistic Spliff that will be released through Vile Tapes Records, Alex and I are working on a Gloombringer EP, and new Bitter Disdain is in the works already as well. I also have some features recorded out there that will be releasing in the near future.

9. What is your favorite piece of art you have produced that has a special place in your heart?

Again, I would have to go with the Heinous Exsanguination EP. This album took us longer to write than most others. We actually had a full length written and then scratched most of the tracks and restarted because the sound wasn‘t quite exactly what we wanted. Then we really dialed it in, Mitchell killed it on the rewrites and production, keeping a raw aggressive sound to the record. We also had the opportunity to get some sick features from artists I‘m a big fan of, the big one being Angel Ochoa of Cephalotripsy and many other legendary projects, as well as Azeraté Nakamura of Ungraceful and LOTS of other bands, and Richard Smihula of Desoectomy on the record, both extremely great vocalists and musicians making an impact in the world of brutal music.

10. Can you tell us a fun fact related to your music that we may not know?

I probably spend more time adjusting my vocals up and down a couple decibels at a time then I actually do recording them haha. My brain breaks when I start trying to find the perfect level for the mix, and even after I think I have it right I keep questioning it. I've even uploaded releases then cancelled them to adjust further, it's a problem, haha.

11. What is the craziest shit that ever happened to you related to the bands?

Nothing too crazy to report unfortunately, especially being online projects with chill people who don't get involved in drama, haha. Honestly, I'm just blown away at the response for each project. Even if we're not doing insane numbers, the fact that people are always excited when a new project is dropping is all I need to make me happy. And it's given us the opportunity to work with some of the best people in the industry. To think that I'm a part of projects on Gore House Productions, Fat Tub of Lard x Brutal Mind, and Vile Tapes Records still blows my mind. I'm super grateful for it.

12. What are your five desert island picks and biggest inspirations?

This isn't definitive but I'll do my best, and this is in no particular order:

1. Diphenylchloroarsine - Post Apocalyptic Human Annihilation

2. Gorevent - Abnormal Exaggeration

3. Cerebral Incubation - Gonorrhea Nodule Mastication

4. Guttural Secrete - Nourishing the Spoil

5. Decomposition of Entrails - Perverted Torments

13. What is your favorite slam sample?

I wasn‘t going to but I'm actually gonna pick the sample from the beginning of one the debut tracks for my new project Bitter Disdain. The sample at the beginning of Chainsawdomizer is from the video game High on Life, and soon as I heard it when I was playing through the game I KNEW it had to be used.

14. Dream tour line-up and destination?

Alright, dream scenario, Heinous Exsanguination gets a full line-up, and we pull up to your city with Devourment, Epicardiectomy, Fatuous Rump, Cerebral Incubation, .357 Homicide. Where are we pulling up on you? I‘d have to say either a European country like Sweden/Norway or head out to Indonesia to experience new cultures.

15. Alien invasion or zombie apocalypse?

Zombies all day no question about it. I think I'd fare pretty well during a zombie apocalypse, plus I'm from Florida, we have the means to deal with them, haha.

16. If there’s anything you’d like to add, feel free to.

Shout out to Mitchell Christian and Alex Sevigny! Without them I wouldn't have been able to be a part of so many sick projects. Both are great people and great musicians and producers and if you have the opportunity to work with either then I highly recommend it. Also shout out to Zachu for working with me on Bitter Disdain. And here's a random fun fact, I love rollercoasters and you can find me at theme parks very often!
